<itunes:summary>Sean Rowley’s show is consistently the best two hours of radio in the UK, so we were proud to be asked to contribute another mix for him, plugging our tenth birthday party. The format was fairly straightforward: three from Jah Shabby, three from Gary, two club classics, then three from the Horse. All rounded off by our abysmal theme tune and a back announcement by some northern monkey who clearly thinks he’s the new John Peel. Enjoy!</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>So, in light of my absence from October’s shenanigans, I was left with a bag full of records and no one to play them to. Here, then, is what you could have won. Well, heard at any rate. Lovingly recorded in my living room with children asleep and me struggling to get to grips with a new mixer. Intro: Ken Nordine – Sound Museum (To get you in the mood. For what I don’t know, mind) Kenny Rogers and the First Edition – Girl Get a Hold of Yourself (Album version, still not sure if I prefer this or the 45. They’re both great, this one’s more of a bass heavy beast.)Bobbie Gentry – Fancy (Great storytelling to a fantastic backbeat, what more could you want?)Jaki Whitren – New Horizon (One of several tunes here that I would never have heard were it not for the expertise and willingness to share knowledge of others.)Jeannie C. Reilly – Back Side of Dallas (Superb rolling backbeat underpins a tragic tale.)Kris Kristofferson – Gettin’ By, High and Strange (Yep, him. Really. Good isn’t it?)Tony Joe White – Soul Francisco (Country got soul? It would appear so, yes.)Elvis Presley – Stranger in My Own Town (Elvis? Sitar? Funky drumming? The king reclaims his crown post Vegas)Herbie Mann – Hold on, I’m Comin’ (It’s almost 9 minutes long, but every second counts. I’ve yet to hear a better version of this tune than this unhinged instrumental. Awesomes!Jimmy Royal – Marmeduke (from the LP Stone Cold Soul. Which is about as good a description of this track as I could give)Creedence Clearwater Revival – Porterville (From their first LP. A highlight for some – me included)Johnny Hallyday – Lettre des Fans (What a groove. Simply stunning French business from an artist who’s, frankly, a bit hit and miss. HIT!)The Youngsters – I Wanna Be Your Man (Beatles cover par excellence from a obsure-as-muck Brazilian combo. Off the excellent Brazilian Fuzz Bananas comp. I know, I know but I’ll never find an original!)Tandy Love - ? (Now I could find out the title, but it’s on the back of the beautiful screen-printed sleeve, which is currently framed and on my living room wall. Ace Turkish re-edit by a well-known DJ, designer and label boss coming to a Fat City LP near you soon!)McDonald & Giles – The Workshop (Proving that prog doesn’t have to be lumbering nonsense. Breaks!)Spencer Mac - Ka Ka Kabya Mow Mow – (And, to end, a dancefloor friendly re-edit of an utter classic.)Hope you enjoy it – see you in November</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Here’s a little mix that combines a few of our favourite things: the powerhouse players of Memphis and Muscle Shoals; the hick hipsters who penned the great tunes (Dan Penn, Tony Joe White and Joe South, mainly); and some rum excursions on the version. It’s inspired by the excellent new Kris Kristofferson demos comp, and if there was any talking on here, I’d doubtless be rabbiting on about two of the best gigs I ever saw (Dan Penn and Spooner Oldham at the Borderline – Bobby Gillespie: “It’s like a church, man” – and George Soule, Larry Jon Wilson and Bonnie Bramlett at Cargo. Thanks to Nat Cramp for introducing me to so many of these; I still wish that I’d called up Dan Penn in Nashville when I had the chance …</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>As a special treat for all you cineastes, our latest resident recruit, Barney, has kindly mixed up 44 minutes of what we’re calling “Technicolor funk”. It’s a glorious confection of duplicitous strings, superfly guitar and poison-tipped balalaikas, irresistibly evocative of cinema’s golden age but often as obscure as hell. As a special treat, we’re gonna burn it as a one-off CD and offer FREE entry for two to the next Rock’n’RollSoul to the person who emails rocknrollsoul@mac.com and identifies the most featured soundtracks.
