<itunes:summary>Today we were on a fact finding mission. Mark had given us the dates he was available to do the crossing and they were any day as long as it was a Saturday. This had a slight effect on our “optimum launch day”. Short of moving sun and moon we had to pick Saturdays that were close to neap tides. They also had to have launch times 2hrs before the ebbing tide went slack during daylight hours and also give us 5hrs of daylight. This had the effect of bringing our anticipated date forward a month in order to give us a chance of secondary dates should we not have favorable weather on D-day. None of these Saturday’s were close to neaps (to take advantage of the slower tidal streams) so we decided to dip our toes offshore into the channel to see what it was like on a spring tide. We left 3hrs after high tide and paddled on a bearing directly south for one hour. The idea being we could then work out the worst case effect of the stream on our bearing.Paddling over the Nash sand bar for the first time took us into the channel proper. Here the mood of the water was different. Today at least it seemed to take on a more powerful feel. Lower frequency and more mass in the waves. It wasn’t long before our hour was up and we plotted our point into the GPS to analyse later. We had a 10 min. rest before paddling back.We had been paddling into a slight headwind on the way out and now made the trip back in about 3/4 of the time. The headwind had caused us to be 3/4 mile short of our anticipated position (this was a surprise as we didn’t think we were being affected by the wind) and the tidal stream had pushed us nearly 0.5 mile west (this was a surprise as we thought we would have been pushed further west). During the 10 min. rest we drifted over a third of a mile west. The conclusions were: that the wind was going to cock-up our navigation; we hadn’t paddled out far enough to reach the anticipated 5 knot spring tidal stream; we should have no more than 5 min rest per hour.
Arriving back into the bay we went through some rescues. Spectacularly failing to roll all of us resorted to some deep water assisted rescue training and a few laughs. All good stuff.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Supported by Eurion and Chris, I was able to achieve ‘assisted’ rolls without any problem. I even surprised myself as I am very comfortable in the inverted position waiting for assistance to roll upright. 20, 30, 35 seconds before I tap three times to signal for assistance. I thought I would have suffered from some (a lot!) of claustrophobia or any other ‘phobia’ from being upside down, under water and trapped in a long plastic tube. The assisted rolls evolved into the paddle roll and that’s when the problems started. Incompetent, uncoordinated and generally crap would describe my attempts at rolling unassisted. Thank God I am comfortable being submerged upside down because believe me, that’s where I spent most of my Thursday evenings during March and April. Despite the capable mentoring from Harry and Ken, I just could not get the hang of the ‘hip flick’, (perfectly understanding for those that have seen me on the dance floor!) Anyway, to cut to the chase I had my ‘eureka’ moment last week. At about 9.15 on the 17th May I rolled the kayak unassisted!! Then I did it again, then again and again and again! I didn’t want to stop I COULD ROLL MY KAYAK! I knew I was going wrong but could pinpoint the problem. Up until that moment, my moral was dipping just like the oar of my paddle – too shallow, wrong orientation and offering no resistance. Coupled with trying to get up to early and too quickly and forgetting all about the hip flick it was no surprise I couldn’t roll the damn kayak! The moment I rolled the kayak it felt right, it felt as though I had done something different. It was all in the lower torso movement – pivoting from the upright position to the leaning back position in one swift movement.. I wasn’t even conscious of ensuring the paddle remain close to the surface – once I knew I was correctly ‘set up’ the focus of my movement was in the torso sweep and not on sweeping the paddle and pushing down on it when I felt resistance. It just seems so obvious now! Of course the real test will come when we go out to see, in cool, unsettled water with zero visibility. I just can’t wait!</itunes:summary>
